Beyond Shorts

The theme of this year’s BISFF is “A State of Exception.” It refers to when new laws are adopted in response to an emergency. An example is the rules that were invented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Prisms program will focus on new forms of filmmaking that demonstrate the imbalances between man and nature, between nature and technology.

Prism Program 2 uses machine-generated imagery: mathematical formulas that create haunting and complex images that seem to spring from nature. Joost Rekveld presents a film and a live performance, both made from software tools he created, but which are based in the laws of nature, both mineral and animal.

The audiovisual performance ≪#2623≫ by Joost Rekveld and Korean musician Kwon Byungjun, uses software based on how social insects can be intelligent together. In the resulting images, swarms of particles cause landscapes that in turn influence their behavior, similar to how the performers react to the sounds and images they produce.
