Beyond Shorts

The theme of this year’s BISFF is “A State of Exception.” It refers to when new laws are adopted in response to an emergency. An example is the rules that were invented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Prisms program will focus on new forms of filmmaking that demonstrate the imbalances between man and nature, between nature and technology.

Prism Program 1 features Karel Doing’s latest film 《In Vivo》 The theme is extinction using fragile, endangered photochemical film processes. We perceive the world through our media, while at the same time that media, and our world, are both breaking down.

An upside-down world, both alienating and familiar: humans appear preprogrammed like ants, while animals and plants act like individuals. The surface of the film material itself is a living breathing skin: grainy, ephemeral, tinted, vibrating. This film is a documentary, a home movie and a symphony. A recurring doomsday clock is counting down: species are disappearing rapidly from the planet. How long will it take to realize that our destructive behavior is irreversible and threatens to destroy everything we love?
